Beware the power of Patrick's mind

Stumbled upon this little gem of a movie poster over at horror movie blog Final Girl today. It made me laugh.

And this one, too, which I think is even better.

I should probably seek out this movie and watch it.

It's a bug's life

What's with all these insects, lately?

First, we discover crickets in the basement. Then we find that the flower boxes on our patio are being destroyed by aphids. And then ants showed up to start feeding on the aphids. What is a person to do?

We opted to fight fire with fire by introducing even more bugs to the situation. We now have a miniature army of ladybugs feasting on the aphids. Did you know you can buy bags full of ladybugs at garden centres? It's true! And they like aphids -- a lot. According to the internerds, an adult ladybug can eat up to 1000 aphids every day.

So, yeah, right now our patio seems overrun by bugs, but if this works out as I expect it to (and I sure hope it does), the ladybugs will make short work of the aphids and then everyone else will leave when they realize there's nothing left for them to eat. Either that, or they all eat each other as well. It's like a freakin' bug buffet. Fingers crossed.

All About Ebert

I've been trying for a few months now to put together a post about my love of Roger Ebert -- um, his writing, that is. The post would be eloquent and filled with a shining admiration for a man who writes some of the best blog posts on the internet. But every time I try, I either get wrapped up in sentimental mumbo jumbo or lose sight of my objective.

The simple truth is: Roger Ebert totally fuckin' rules and I don't know how to put it any more eloquently than that. Whether he's writing about the history of cigarettes on film, his battles with cancer, Bill O'Reilly, physical disfigurement, his friend Gene Siskel, patriotism, religion, or even Tranformers 2 -- he finds something interesting to say and says it well.

Some of my favourite pieces (happy reading):
Edit: I fixed a few bad links. Sorry about that.
